They are being transferred from the starting bin in to dutch buckets. Hope to do that here in the next day or so. Also started another batch of lettuce. As you can see from the photos they have been growing for a bit. Enjoy.
Longer than the planned 30 but I suspect it is because we keep our home cool and that kept growth slow. Here is one of the heads from harvest...
The results were awesome! And the lettuce smells and tastes so good! Batch two is already started. Lettuce is doing well. As I mentioned, this is my first hydroponics bed so I am excited to see how well it is doing.

We will be away for 10 days so I will post another update when we get back.

Until then, be green....Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-83164286108998063132014-01-12T19:04:00.002-05:002014-01-12T19:04:29.011-05:00First update in over a year.

This is going to be an exciting year for us. I can hardly believe we did not post anything here in 2013. We will try to be better about that in 2014.

As you can see we have started growing some hydroponic lettuce. This is our first venture down this road but so far we are liking it.

2014 also has a rather large move in store for us. We just purchased a house and just under 4 acres in southern North Carolina. The place even had a 1/2 acre pond and a small greenhouse! Plus chickens!

We are excited and can not wait to see what 2014 had in store for us in sunny North Carolina. Until next time eat, grow, and think green!

Two days short from one month since I put the seed in the ground. Exciting! Tomato plants now under their own light and stand covered on three sides in reflective foil( not shown)
. Lettuce doing great as well as all the other plants!
And for the most part we do. I am guessing about 80% of the time we are eating healthy and raw. Tonight we watched on Netflix a documentary called “Food Matters”. If there is nothing else you ever read or watch, please please please take the time to watch this documentary. It is perhaps the most important thing you could ever do for your health. If you wish to purchase this DVD you can find it on Amazon and or visit this site to buy it directly…

Food Matters

Eat right and make a change…

Namaste.
Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-20517933135180115082012-06-25T13:35:00.001-04:002012-06-25T13:35:54.869-04:00Please Vote for Waking Bear StudioThanks to a program sponsored by Chase and LivingSocial called Mission: Small Business℠, your support could translate into a $250,000 grant. We have expanded our raised beds from two to six. Big jump this year. Some things however did not get planted till late.

In the photo here you can see the chives we moved out of a raised bed and in to it’s own container. The blooms were awesome on the chive this year.

The tomato is an patio tomato, like an early girl. We bought it with fruit on it already. January has been a fun and exciting month for us! We spent 10 days in Florida doing a wholesale show and spending time with good friends! We had a blast! We did pretty well at the show and had great weather. Even though it was a business trip it felt like a much needed vacation! We even packed the Vitamix and had some awesome smoothies for breakfast each day!

We have just spent the last week filling orders from the show and getting caught up on parts and jobs for Gross Brothers Welding. We are finishing up tomorrow just in time to fly out Tuesday on a REAL two week vacation to the West Indies. We are off to Dominica for two weeks of fun, sun and more fruit than you can imagine! We can not wait to kick back and just enjoy ourselves.

Green goodness! Lettuce, spinach, celery, banana, apple and HONEYBELL ORANGES! Super yum!

More to come from Dominica…
Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-64440700071988406322012-01-07T17:34:00.001-05:002012-01-07T17:36:00.175-05:00Us, 2012 and Waking Bear Studio
Well here we are 1 week in to 2012 and busy as heck. We are working hard to get ready for our first wholesale show which is in Florida. We have less than two weeks till we leave. So busy we are. On top of that we received two new orders in the last two days.

I just finished another railing job for Gross Brothers Welding, and some various parts for other projects with them. What sleep?

We are back to eating about 90% raw vegan and loving it. Our smoothies have been awesome and we get up looking forward to making them. As you can imagine the Vitamix will be making the trip to Florida.

This year is looking crazy from the start. Crazy in a good way, I guess We even got an offer to have our art in an online store that sells items made from recycled material. Most of what we make is made from scrap left over from Gross Brothers and the parts they and I fab. So what the heck, I think we will see were this online store leads. Martha has been in talks with them.

Have a great day and an awesome 2012!
Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-21516916841412559282011-12-25T00:34:00.001-05:002011-12-25T00:34:08.862-05:00Challenges of Life
Life has been offering us many challenges. Some of which we wish we would not have been offered. One of those challenges occurred October 16th, 2011 when Martha’s mother passed away. Adelaide Rogers “Tad” Murphy was Martha’s best friend and biggest supporter. To say that Martha (we) miss Tad is an understatement. It is always hard to lose a parent and a friend. Tad taught all that knew her what it was like to be truly selfless. She always put others first and she always expected nothing in return. Never a bad word about anyone. This world is better because she was in it. And it would be much better if more people were like her. We miss and love you deeply Tad. Thank you God for sharing her with us.

With 2012 almost here life is about to change again. I have resigned my 11 year position so that I may pursue a vastly different job with Martha’s brother-in-law. This new job will allow me more time to focus on our own business by allowing me to work from home part of the time. In addition to the new job we are also doing our first wholesale show in Florida in January and then a second show in Vegas in June. Nerve racking but exciting.

Lastly, we are going back to our healthy raw vegan lifestyle. As you can imagine it has been hard to maintain raw vegan when your world has been turned upside down. These last few months have been very difficult to say the least. Things are finally leveling off to were we can get back in to the swing of raw. Both of us feel so good eating raw that we will succeed. We love life to much not to.

Namaste friends…

Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-83895539016381309312011-09-30T00:23:00.001-04:002011-09-30T00:29:18.396-04:00Mobile BloggingTesting mobile blogging. I personally have lost about 30 pounds and feel better than I have ever felt. Martha has chosen not to do the weigh in thing, but I am certain she has lost 20+ pounds. She is wearing cloths she has not wore in a long time and she to is feeling great!

Raw Vegan suits us both. Although we have the occasional cheat, we stay pretty much on track. We love our smoothies and salads! We look forward to both everyday and believe it or not, we do not grow tired at all eating this way. Both allow us to make some awesome food!

We have been getting some things from an organic store not far from us. Of course we don’t eat pure organic but we do what we can. Our garden was a huge success in providing for us and we look forward to next years garden! We plan to add at least one more raised bed for sure if not two. My goal is to get some hydroponics going over the winter so we can see what we can produce indoors. Meditation 5:30am in the midst of a thunderstorm. Silence and calm other than thunder/lighting and the pouring rain, what a wonderful back drop to a nice meditation. After which came a short yoga stretch session. A few minutes is all it takes to feel a nice burn and to realize just how long it has been since I was in shape. I will get there.
Then for the morning smoothie.... mangos, banana and orange. This smoothie, add pineapple or strawberries, is our favorite. It is so good. Today I will be picking at apples and bananas. Maybe a salad for lunch, we shall see. Snacking will be more apples and some nuts. Not many, just a few for the crunch factor.

Martha and I are working very hard. Our business has picked up and is getting down right crazy. In a good way mind you. The way the world is today it is good to have the work and income rather than not. Both of us continue to sneak exercise in to our day. That is a must in order to maintain our physical and mental health. We are both feeling great even though it is crazy.
Life is good.
Biking has become something we both really look forward to. This morning was no exception. We only did a little over 20 miles, but the first 10 miles was up hill. Not a steep grade, but up hill none the less.

We started in Confluence and biked to the Pinkerton tunnel. This section of the trail is almost all under canopy. Very pretty riding with some very cool bridges. To bad I forgot the dang camera! Here is the GPS data from this ride….

I am trying to get all the sections under my belt that I will ride in one day. I think I have 2 or so sections to go. And then my fall ride will be 80 miles in a day. Should work out good. And really be fairly easy. Famous last words. lol
Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511354781826722731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1020586048772290779.post-60933613018377211612011-08-13T21:27:00.001-04:002011-08-13T23:40:24.927-04:0046 Miles!! Are you insane!!
It would appear that way. Martha’s niece Emily is here for the weekend with us and we decided to go for a nice bike ride on the trail. We figured 24 miles, from Rockwood to Meyersdale and back.

When we arrived at Meyersdale and had a little rest, and some water, it was determined that we all felt pretty good! (at first I thought napping was the answer:)......however, I am now supplementing with B12 and I noticed when I start to feel tired I am also feeling hungry. So, I am adding in another smoothie in the afternoon and when I feel super tired, I am going to either walk a little or ride my bike.

Today for lunch I am having frozen wild strawberries, fresh picked blueberries and banana as a smoothie. I also picked up 5 bags of ripe bananas that I will peel, slice and freeze this afternoon. All in all I am having a really good day and feel very energetic, even after mowing our lawn that was like mowing a field!Martha McKinley Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08988886074499482717noreply@blogger.com0
